Genèse — Walt Disney Animation studios et la suite la plus attendue post-Encanto 2021

Le projet Moana 2 est annoncé en février 2024 par Walt Disney Animation studios + Disney comme un long-métrage animation théâtral surprise — initialement, Moana 2 était développé comme une série Disney+ « Moana: The Series » annoncée par Bob Iger novembre 2020 D23 mais Disney pivote en juin 2024 (8 mois pré-sortie) vers une sortie cinéma intégrale, profitant du succès Inside Out 2 (1.7 Mrd$, juin 2024) qui démontre le pouvoir cinéma post-COVID-19.
